INSEE-SANDEE will conduct a post-conference one day workshop for PhD scholars working in the area of Ecology & Economics which will be held on 23rd October, 2011 at CESS, Hyderabad .

Interested PhD scholars will be required to send a short note which must include the following:

a) An outline of their PhD proposal (not exceeding 5000 words) including the research question and methodology.

b) Current status of the PhD thesis

Resource persons for the workshop are two leading practitioners in the area of environment: their presentations will introduce participants to biophysical, ecological and economic frameworks and alternative methodologies for analysing environmental issues.

The workshop will also include lectures and presentations by selected participants.

Faculty

A. Dr Jagdish Krishnaswamy is the Convenor and Senior Fellow, Suri Sehgal Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation, Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE). His sessions will cover the following topics:

1) The bio-physical and ecological frame-work: Examining processes in spatial and temporal scales, in the presence of anthropogenic interventions.

2) Introducing Bayesian thinking and approaches as a quantitative analytical frame-work that integrates statistics as an integral part of the scientific method

B. Prof. A.K. Enamul Haque is the Executive Director of the Economics Research Group, Dhaka and teaches Economics at the United International University , Dhaka . His sessions will cover the following topics:

•  Effectiveness of Economic tools for Natural Resource Management

•  Methodological issues in environmental valuation and decision making.

Dr. Nilanjan Ghosh and Dr. Pranab Mukhopadhyay will be the workshop co-ordinators

     
     
     
   

Workshop Structure

Each resource person will give two short sessions of 40 minutes each on above mentioned topics. Select reading material will be circulated before hand to participants so that the session can devote more time to discussion and interaction with the resource person.

After the expert sessions, there will be two participant presentation sessions where 8 workshop participants will be requested to make presentations. There will be 8 other participants who will be the designated discussants.

The workshop will have one final session which is conceived as a round table discussion on Issues & Methods in Interdisciplinary research in Ecology & Economics. The discussion will be led by Nilanjan Ghosh, A.K. Enamul Haque, Jagdish Krishnaswamy, and Pranab Mukhopadhyay.

The speakers will initiate the discussion with 5-10 minute introductory remarks. The remainder of the time will be kept for PhD scholars to raise issues. Last 10 minutes will be used for responses from the panellists.
