In waterbodies and waterways, in scarcity (drought) and in surfeit (floods), waters produce and inscribe social difference and indifference. This talk employs empirical material from studies in Chennai to explore the politics of urban waters.
The talk will introduce the concept of “social metabolism”, and by extension socio-metabolic research (or SMR).
Allocative efficiency in a thermal power sector can be defined as the equalisation of marginal abatement costs (MACs) across power plants for a given emission cap. Computation of the MAC (loss in electricity generation per unit reduction in emission generation) requires specification of the emission-generating technology.
This course provides participants with an overview of tools to estimate the benefits of environmental (non market) goods using contingent valuation method (CVM).
Industrial effluents and municipal wastewater are increasingly finding their way into freshwater bodies, posing serious health and environmental challenges. In this paper, the potential for industrial wastewater remediation through agroforestry is explored for a peri urban farming region in India.
The decline in human mobility and socioeconomic activities during the COIVD-19 pandemic has been accompanied by reports of significant improvements in air quality. We evaluate whether there was a uniform improvement in air quality across neighborhoods, with a special attention to race.
Participants will get practice in using core methods in the R software, including the tidyverse package around which a lot of current developments in R happen.
This workshop aims to approach these questions step by step and from an interdisciplinary perspective based on the approach of Ecological Economics.
• What are socio-ecological transformations?
• Why is it useful to analyse these transformation processes using an interdisciplinary framework?
• How can such an interdisciplinary framework be developed?
• What perspectives and theoretical dimensions are opened by this approach?
